Quick note: I had occasion to wander through a local Best Buy today, noticed a preorder box for Gods and Heroes… for $49?
This was an error on Best Buy’s part, right? Someone got a little confused while working the pricing gun… correct? The Tabula Rasa preorder box was right next to it for the far more typical $10.
Just looking for some reassurance that we haven’t entered the era where people will pay full retail price for a game that isn’t even being released for several months yet…

I’ve seen it at a few BB stores as well. Weird.

Not to mention for a game that was just delayed until 2008….

I actually prefer to put all of my money down initially. It’s just as easy to get the money back, and that way I’m not in for a nasty surprise when I’ve forgotten about the pre-order months later.
I was thinking about stopping by some stores today to see if they have any Halo 3 copes left. What do you think my odds are?

It almost feels like the opposite of the PotBS situation: instead of lagging behind on the marketing and distribution front, in this case they were so ready to distribute that delaying the release caused a misstep.
I wish I knew more about how that really worked: for example, my understanding was that shelf space is pretty precious (and even more so at BB, since it looks to me like they are still shrinking the total space for computer software at certain stores, down to less than 1.5 full length rows at Apple Valley, with videos starting to encroach on that). Maybe it’s a situation of “you reserved this space, you’re going to have something in it, by god?”
As for the price… I’ve seen too many late stage cancellations, I guess. Plopping down full price for what still might become vapor would be tough for me.
Oh, and I hope you had good luck on Halo 3. 🙂

I don’t trust any release date in this industry until it has less than a month to go (and even then, it’s not certain). Once you get that close, most games aren’t in any danger of cancellation. I’m absolutely certain I’m going to buy Mass Effect, but I won’t pre-order it until November.
The first place I tried, a Gamestop, had a copy for me! Honestly, I think he was dipping into his reserves and betting that his next shipment would arrive before everyone picked up their pre-orders, but I was amazed to find a copy ready. There’s no game I would stand in line for hours for.
I might post a review soon. So far, I have mixed impressions. It does seem like a keeper though, like something I’ll still be able to play a couple months from now.
